Day 15 - Asheboro to Uwharrie National Forest to Westmore

Total Mileage: 25.03 Miles. "Embrace the Suck"
Today was so full of ups and downs, I started the day with a sore throat and feeling drained (I know, call the whaaaambulance). I did not think I could possibly run 15 miles much less 25. It was cold and rainy and when Monty dropped me off at the starting point, it was shocking how windy it was. I basically walked the first seven feeling miserable but also more determined than ever, after hearing some encouraging words from people I love and admire. I wanted to get as far as I could go, whatever that distance was. Mentally I had the number 20. This is a common Runners trick, to set a goal that you think you can achieve, but secretly hope you surpass.

Monty was awesome as usual, greeting me every 2  1/2 to 3 miles with some drink or food. I had to get in the car to warm up and stop shaking at Mile 10 or 12, but miraculously (or maybe it was just the weather), I started to feel a little better and the rain started to slacking off by the time I was at mile 16 or 17. After a Seagrove chicken wrap at Mile 19, I was pretty sure I could hit the target 25. This was a day when I sorely wanted to give up. I thought of mentors and people watching my progress, and I felt like this was not a day I was prepared to surrender.

Here are some impressions from Day 15:
A love attack from a golden lab running out into the street, the owner had to drive his golf cart down the road to put a leash on the Playful Pup.

Flocks of goldfinches exploding up on each side of me as I ran through a field, I've never seen the air so thick with yellow birds.

A herd of cows all snout-deep in the grass, suddenly all looking up at the same time, all with green leaves hang out of their mouths, made me laugh out loud

A line of ducks crossing the road in military-like fashion, indignant at my gasping interruption

Houses like this one, slowly seeping out memories of families that lived and loved them, once upon a time.
A pet pig where I expected to see a dog.

Yards having signs that say "Thank you Jesus" on one side, and "Trespassers will be shot" on the other. Left me confused.

Godspeed,

R.
