Day 2 - Murphy to Nantahala

Distance: 25+ miles Day 2 and I'm still alive!  Woke up feeling a little sleep deprived, wishing I could start later but knowing there was a long day ahead.  I ran right out of the hotel onto highway 74 headed east.  Cheryl met me at about miles 5, 10 and 14 with refreshments, a chair, and her great company.  I felt like I was climbing the whole way, certainly my pace was slower today.  We made it to our jump off point at mile 19 then went and soaked our feet in the Nantahala River, watching the kayaks go by and enjoying the sun. We decided to try a trail, since Rte 19 offered no shoulder to run on...really suicidal to even attempt it.  Matt and Cheryl drove up a national forest road and I rucked up...3 miles straight up.  It was beautiful up top but I still needed a few more miles to get to 25.  We had a nice hike at about 3000 ft around a lake, and I ran partway down the mountain to get my last mile in.

Day 22 - Lagoon to Moores Creek National Battlefield

Total Mileage: 25.12 miles I woke up today in a much better place, mentally prepared for a long day and accepting of the fact that my legs would be tired from yesterday's emotional and physical beatdown. Today was a straight shot down 52.  I started a few miles earlier than on the planned route, since the highway is basically the same from Kelly through to the juncture of 210. It was a flat, straight road through pretty farmland, and although there were a number of logging and poultry trucks zooming by, I still had room. Following 210 over Black Creek and some amazing swampland, we came in to Moores Creek Battlefield National Monument. I hadn't really intended on doing any miles in the park itself, but it is an amazing treasure.  The park commemorates a significant engagement fought in 1776 between local patriots and 1,600 loyalist troops, mostly Scottish Highlanders. Week 12 - Some Challenges

  Concord, NC - This week the mileage has increased to 18 miles of rucking 3 times a week, and the distance is starting to take a toll.    My pace has slowed down to about 13 min/mile so each run is taking almost 4 hours.  If I want to be home by 7 am that means a 3 am start!  In other whining news, my feet are starting to really hurt...its not planter faciitis, just general inflammation from all that pounding.   Cheryl had a great idea to interject riding with my running, so here I am during the SuperBowl last night, with my bike parked next to the treadmill.  1 hr run, 30 min ride, 1 hr run, 30 min ride...rinse and repeat.   Pretty boring actually, but I finally got to watch "Django" in its entirety.   Love that QT! We still need drivers for the event..anyone? Anyone? Please reach out if you are interested, we can't do this without a ride!
